Gauchos Advance to WWLL Semifinal with 12-8 Win over 16th Ranked ASU

UCSB vs. ASU in WWLL QuarterfinalsLos Angeles, CA - Fifth ranked UCSB won 12-8 over 16th ranked ASU in a WWLL Quarterfinal game to advance to a semifinal with Cal Poly SLO. The 4th ranked Mustangs were 24-5 winners over unranked University of San Diego in their quarterfinal. The winner plays at 2pm Sunday for the WWLL Championship versus the winner of the Santa Clara versus UC Davis semifinal. The top ranked Broncos advanced with an 18-4 win over unranked San Diego State and 3rd ranked UC Davis advanced with a 16-14 win over 8th ranked UCLA.

"We played well enough to win this game and it was a much better performance than our 10-9 win over them in the quarterfinals last year," commented UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey.

"We do have better lacrosse in us, though, and we need it to come out."

UCSB sophomore goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 9 saves while freshman Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) had a ridiculous 6 ground balls, a draw control and a goal. Senior Maggie Aker (Oakland, CA) led all scorers with 4 goals and 2 assists while senior Sam Lutz (San Diego, CA) lwas close behind her with 1 goal and 4 assists.

UCSB improved to 12-2 overall with the win while the 16th ranked Sun Devils dropped to 8-4. Six teams in the WWLL Tournament are ranked in the top 16 of the WDIA National Top 25 Poll. The WWLL Tournament is the toughest conference or league tournament in the country. The semifinals here are as competitive as the semifinals in the WDIA National Championship Tournament.
