Jeni Centner (File Photo)Poway, CA - Both games had similar scores as the UCSB 'A' & 'B' teams opened up the season on the road in San Diego. UCSB shut out their opponent while playing their UCSD counterparts on a rainy day on the turf at Poway High School.  The UCSB 'B' team won 15-0 in the opener with a driving rain sometimes beating down and other times letting up to a light drizzle. Conditions were marginally better at the start of the second game but the skies opened up several times for outbursts matched only by the Gaucho offense. The UCSB 'A' Team won 18-0.

Shown they way, so to speak, by the 'B' Team the UCSB 'A' Team took the field and kept it going the Gauchos way by winning the first draw control. UCSB  settled in on offense but an errant pass almost gave the Tritons the ball. Instead, UCSB defender Monora Seth alertly scooped it up at the restraining line and found junior Alyssa Nelsen cutting behind her defender in the unsettled situation. Seth made a nice 25 yard pass that Nelsen collected and put past the UC San Diego goalie for the first 'A' Team goal of the season.

In the 'B' Team game 7 Gauchos contributed to the offense and 6 of their 15 goals were assisted. In the 'A' Team game 10 UCSB players scored on a goal or an assist as the Gauchos outshot UCSD 31-7. UCSB had 13 assisted goals on 14 goals from the field. The other 4 UCSB goals came on free position shots.

UCSB 'A' Team sophomore goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) turned away UCSD attackers 4 times on 4 shots on goal  to get her first shutout at the collegiate level. Overall the Tritons managed 7 shots but 3 went wide. Center made 2 point blank saves toward the end of the game that earned her the shutout.

"Those two saves at the end of a game where she'd been standing around facing a shot only every once in a while might be as impressive as any Jeni has ever made," said third year UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after the game. "It's easy to mentally check out that late with the game winding down but she didn't."

Freshman goalie Kat Frazer (San Jose, CA) made her debut for the UCSB 'B' Team and got a shut-out by virtue of making a save on the only shot against her in her first 30 minutes of college action. Rookie sophomore goalie Nazzy Rodriguez (San Jose, CA) also had a shutout without having to touch the ball, facing shots her defense forced wide. The Gauchos did a nice job forcing UCSD shots wide of the cage.

UCSB 'A' faces NCAA Division III Claremont on Sunday, February 7th, in a 12:30pm Surfside Cup match-up on the turf at Rancho Bernardo High School. Claremont is coming off three straight NCAA DIII play-off appearances. UCSB 'B' next plays at home on February 13th in the 22nd Annual Santa Barbara Shootout by Brine.
