UCSB Women's Lacrosse Class of 2013 is 14 Strong

Santa Barbara, CA - A combination of fourteen recruits and walk-ons make up the recruiting class that is joining UCSB women's lacrosse for the 2009-10 academic year. This recruiting class has a strong defensive presence for the first time in the last two seasons with four defenders and a goal keeper but there are also six midfielders and two attackers rounding out the group. The Gauchos return all but two starters from the 2009 team but they were both WDIA All-Americans so there are some shoes to fill. Defender  Selina Eadie (WDIA Second Team All-American) and Midfielder  Katie Moran (WDIA First Team All-American and WDIA Player of the Year) have graduated.

The 14 new players will join 15 players eligible to return from the UCSB 'A' Team of last season and 20 players eligible to return from the UCSB 'B' Team. Fall Ball practices start October 5th and run for six weeks, three days a week. UCSB could have as many as 35 returners plus these 14 new players and anyone who asks to come out for the team between now and October vying for spots on their two teams.

UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey feels the Gauchos need to improve on defense and in the midfield to grab the WDIA national title and this group is going to help make that happen. The UCSB 'B' Team is also going to improve as a result of the influx of talent  and Ramsey expects that team to compete for the WWLL DII Championship again. The Gauchos B side last won that title in 2006.

"This new group is so strong with athletic ability and lacrosse talent it would likely represent UCSB well on it's own as a team of 14 players," says Ramsey. "They're joining a strong group of returning players, though, so nobody is on their own in this program."

"We're going to have an ultra competitive situation out there on the field to make our A Team roster."

"But it will sort itself out by the end of fall, it always does."

UCSB women's lacrosse does not make cuts. Players make either the A Team or the B Team and everyone, including beginners, have a place to play in the program.
