Samantha LutzPalo Alto, CA - Playing in the opening round of the Western States Tournament at Stanford University top ranked UCSB won 15-6 over 22nd ranked University of Texas after leading 8-3 at halftime. It was the first game for the Gauchos in 14 days after extended time off for final exams and spring break but UCSB steadily pulled away from the Longhorns. Junior  Samantha Lutz  (San Diego, CA) led all scorers with 5 goals and 4 assists, having a hand in 9 of the 15 UCSB goals. The scoring started a little more than a minute into the game when Lutz assisted junior  Francesca Perrone  (Davis, CA). Two unassisted goals by Lutz were sandwiched by a Texas goal to make it 3-1 but then UCSB scored 6 unanswered goals to take an 8-1 lead. Texas put two in before halftime.

The Gauchos started quick the second half scoring 4 straight to take a 12-3 lead. Two Longhorns goals followed making it 12-5 but UCSB scored another two goals to end the game. Draw controls went the way of Texas more often than not. They won 10 of 23 draws but UCSB had 24 ground balls and outshot Texas 25-10. UCSB improved to 12-2 while Texas dropped to 8-8.
