Gauchos Drop Shootout Opener 7-6 to MichiganFeb. 13, 2009 Santa Barbara, CA - A 3-0 deficit eleven minutes into the game was too much for UCSB to overcome in their opening game at the Santa Barbara Shootout. 6th ranked Michigan upset 4th ranked UCSB 7-6. The Gauchos clawed back to get to within one goal at half-time and eventually tied it up twice at 4-4 and 5-5 in the second half but couldn't get ahead before time expired. The leading goal scorer for UCSB was senior Katie Moran (San Rafael, CA) with 2 goals. Sophomore Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA) had 3 assists. Freshman goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 7 saves. Junior Monora Seth (San Diego, CA) led the defense with 3 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers and a draw control. "We responded well to getting down early so that's a good thing," said head coach Paul Ramsey after the game."It was a bit of a shock to have that happen but we were able to reset mentally and start playing better." Michigan outshot UCSB 22-18 and won the draw control battle 8-7. UCSB was facing an uphill battle digging out of the 3-0 hole. The Shootout games are 50 minute games with a mostly running clock instead of 60 minute games with the clock stopping after each goal is scored. A team that is behind runs out of time for a comeback a lot faster in this situation. The loss dropped the Gauchos to 2-1 heading into their second Shootout game with Florida.
