UCSB 'B' Team Opens With a WinJan. 31, 2009 Santa Barbara, CA - The UCSB women's lacrosse 'B' team opened the 2009 season with a 12-6 win over the only team from Occidental College. It was a replay of sorts of the 2008 WWLL Division Two 3rd place game, which the Tigers won 10-9. Occidental was the regular season champion for the WWLL South Second Division last season. The Gauchos play in North D2 and are off to a good start on their non-division record, which will help with getting a good seed if they qualify for the play-offs again this year. The game was close for a half. Occidental struck first on an unassisted goal 27 seconds into the game but UCSB responded with four unanswered goals. Freshman Morgan Flint (Oak Park, IL) started the run with her own unassisted goal and then freshman Shelby Grose (Rancho Santa Margarita) scored three in a row to put UCSB up 4-1 with 11:16 remaining in the half. The Tigers struck back with 2 goals, including one with 12 seconds on the clock to pull within one at 4-3 for halftime. Any Occidental momentum was quickly squelched by the Gauchos at the restart. UCSB owned most of the second half outscoring the Tigers 8-3, including scoring the last four goals of the game to put Occidental away. Grose scored the 4th of her game high four goals at 4:33 into the second half. Sophomore Alyssa Newman (San Diego, CA) tallied the same number of points with 3 goals and 1 assist. Freshman Danielle McComb (Spring Valley, CA) netted the eventual game winner when she scored UCSB's 7th goal of the game at just 9:28 into the final stanza. Overall seven Gauchos contributed to the offense with at least either a goal or an assist.Sophomore Marie Madaras (Wilton, CT) anchored UCSB with 15 saves and only 6 goals allowed to get 71.4% on saves. UCSB 'B' improves to 1-0 while Occidental drops to 0-1. The Gauchos next play at UC Irvine on Sunday, February 8th, in another WWLL inter-diviision game.
