Maggie AkerSan Diego, CA - UCSB played the final game of the Surfside Cup in San Diego taking on Arizona State in a Western Women's Lacrosse League inter-region game. The 4th ranked Gauchos started fast taking a 14-3 lead into halftime while also getting everyone suited up into the game. Nineteen UCSB players saw action in the first 20 minutes of the game and then exchanged for each other regularly every 10 minutes or so through the 60 minutes of stopped clock play. Junior  Samantha Lutz (San Diego, CA) led all goal scorers again for the second game in a row with 4 goals. Sophomore  Alyssa Nelsen (Denver, CO) led the team in points with 3 goals and 2 assists. UCSB improved on sharing the wealth from the night before when 9 Gauchos contributed to the offense in an 18-5 win over San Diego State.  Eleven players got in on the action on the attack against the Sun Devils.

"That sets the bar pretty high for sharing the ball on offense," said head coach  Paul Ramsey about eleven players getting at least a goal or an assist.

"The new players stepped up and played big roles," said sophomore Brittany Barry (Basking Ridge, NJ).  "We're very proud of them."

The UCSB defense continued the team concept as well limiting Arizona State to 10 shots on goal with lots of help on the ball and slides to the Sun Devils' second options. UCSB outshot Arizona State 36-10. Junior midfielder  Maggie Aker led UCSB with 6 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers and 1 draw control and also had 3 goals and 1 assist. Junior  Monora Seth (San Diego, CA) led all low defender with 2 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers and 1 draw control with senior  Selina Eadie (Davis, CA) close behind with 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.  Freshman  Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 6 saves in 10 shots against her for 60% on saves.

"This weekend was a great opener for our team, we meshed well right away and I'm excited for the season," said sophomore  Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA).

UCSB improves to 2-0 while Arizona State drops to 0-1. The Gauchos are next in action at the CAL Play-Day at UC Berkeley on February 1st. The event features NCAA Division I teams UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Fresno State, St. Mary's and Stanford who play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). as well as other WWLL teams. The play-day was going to be the opener for the Gauchos before the opportunity to play in the Surfside Cup came along. In the play-day format the Gauchos will play four 25 minute scrimmages against different opponents. UCSB is hoping for a chance to test themselves against at least two of the MPSF teams. The schedule will be relased sometime in the middle of the week.
