UCSB to Open at Surfside Cup in San DiegoJan. 21, 2009 Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB Women's Lacrosse will start regular season play at the WomensLax.com Surfside Cup January 24th at Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego. The Gauchos face San Diego State on Saturday and Arizona State on Sunday. Both games are part of double header showcase games in front of an audience of select high school club teams playing during the day in their own tournament at the same location. The 5pm game on Saturday puts UCSB playing the Aztecs before a 7:30pm contest featuring Northwestern University and the Canadian National Team. The 1pm Sunday game between the Gauchos and the Sun Devils follows the 11am University of Denver vs. Canada game. San Diego State and Arizona State are both members of the Western Women's Lacrosse League (WWLL) in the South Division. UCSB competes in the Central Division. The UCSB 'B' Team also competes this weekend. The Gauchos will face UCLA 'B', Nevada-Reno and UCSD 'B' in exhibition games in the Open Division of the Surfside Cup. UCSB 'B' is guided by first year head coach Jaime Schumaker while UCSB 'A' head coach Paul Ramsey returns for his second season. The Gauchos were successful the last time out against San Diego State, winning 18-4 on March 15, 2008 in Santa Barbara. UCSB hasn't played Arizona State since beating them 14-3 on February 18, 2007 in Tempe.The UCSB 'A' Team is coming of a 2008 campaign where they finished 20-2 overall but lost 11-10 in overtime in the national championship semi-finals to rival Cal Poly SLO. The UCSB 'B' Team finished 8-5 in 2008 and ended with a 10-9 loss to Occidental in the 3rd place game of the WWLL D2 championship tournament. Complete Surfside Cup Schedule
