Ashley Antoon-Algieri Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB women's lacrosse opened Fall Ball with a multi-game scrimmage against Tricheck Lacrosse Club from Los Angeles and won 18-11. It was the inaugural Santa Barbara Fall Play-Day but the only two teams taking advantage of the playing opportunity were UCSB and Tricheck. The teams squared off in two 40 minute games. Twenty-three Gauchos suited up for the scrimmages while seven others are scattered all over the globe away on Fall Quarter Abroad programs.

Senior captain Katie Moran and sophomore attacker Ashley Antoon-Algieri were the only returning A Team starters participating in the scrimmages. Three 2008 A Team reserves; junior attacker Samantha Lutz, junior midfielder Francesca Perrone and sophomore midfielder Alyssa Nelsen round out the returning A Team players playing Fall Ball for UCSB.  These five returning A Team players supplemented a mix of eighteen players from the 2008 UCSB B Team and first year players to face a Tricheck team that had beaten the Gauchos 15-13 in the first Fall Ball scrimmage of the 2007-08 season on October 14, 2007.

The box score represents the two games as a one game 18-11 success for UCSB. However, the two games of two 20 minute halves were 9-5 and 9-6 consecutive successes, respectively.  In the first tilt the Gauchos took a 5-2 half-time lead and extended it to the 9-5 final with a 4-3 second half. In the second game a closer 3-2 first half led to a 6-4 second half for the 9-6 final. No stats were kept but a mix of returners and rookies contributed in every possible category all over the field.

The Gauchos were pleased to avenge the loss at the hands of Tricheck that started the 2007 Fall Ball season. Last year UCSB was pretty much at full strength against Tricheck in terms of returning A Team players and only one junior was abroad. Turning the result around bodes well for the team this year.

We certainly look like we've filled some of the shoes left behind when five seniors departed from last year's team," said head coach Paul Ramsey after the scrimmage. He continued, "we have a lot of young talent out there this year."
