WDIA Championship LogoBaltimore, MD - US Lacrosse released word today that top ranked and undefeated UCSB has been awarded the #1 overall seed in the WDIA National Championship Tournament to be played May 7 - 10 in Denver, Colorado. The Gauchos will play #16 seed Boston College Club in a 1:00pm contest on May 7th. The BC squad finished the season 9-0 and won the New England Women's Lacrosse League title to earn an automatic bid. The Eagles are unranked and did not play any Top 25 teams this year but are 6th in the RPI based on margin of victory over teams on their schedule. Eight conferences passed WDIA standards to be able to name an automatic bid recipient and eight spots were allocated to at-large teams.

A successful outing in that opening round game will advance UCSB to a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of the Lindenwood vs. UCLA game. Those two teams grabbed the 8th and 9th seeds, respectively. Success there will put the Gauchos in the semifinals to play the winners of games between 4th seeded Michigan vs. 12th seeded Georgia and 5th seeded Cal Poly SLO vs. 13th seeded Michigan State. If seeds bear out in the first round then UCSB will play the winner of Michigan vs. Cal Poly SLO. Michigan was a 10-8 winner over the Mustangs on February 16th at the Santa Barbara Shootout but fell 13-8 to the Gauchos on the same day.

The Western Women's Lacrosse League put four teams into the tournament. This is the second time in the history of the WDIA National Championship that four teams from the same conference have qualified. The only other time it's happened was in 2005 when Arizona State, Cal Poly SLO, UCSB and Santa Clara represented the WWLLL at the championships.
