UCSB Perseveres over Tokai For Second TimeOct. 27, 2007 Waikiki, HI - The
final game of exhibition play for UCSB in Hawaii came against a team
the Gauchos had already dispatched the day before in an 8-2 victory.
Tokai University came out on fire and took the lead at 1-0 and then 2-0
before UCSB responded. It was the first deficit for the Gauchos all
tournament. UCSB may have been facing some inspiration issues playing
their sixth game in 24 hours. The Gauchos first game was at 3pm on
Friday and their sixth round robin game started at 2pm on Saturday. "It is difficult to get excited to play that many times in a one day period," said head coach Paul Ramsey. "Even though we're playing a game we love having the sixth and final game be against a team we'd already beaten may have made it tough to get the adrenalin going." Tokai, however, was inspired to take advantage of the chance to beat a team that had beaten them. They used their quickness to win ground balls in the tall grass at Kapiolani Park and used outlets immediately to spark their transition game. Quick hitting back door cutters gave the UCSB defense some problems early on in the game while the active Tokai goalie kept getting in the way of UCSB shots on goal. Eventually
UCSB caught up and then pulled ahead to lead 4-3 at half-time. Then
they used their depth to pull away from Tokai in the second half and
win 9-5. The Gauchos finished their multiple purpose trip to Oahu with
a 6-0 record in lacrosse games and a sense of their potential for the
season.
"Everyone got better here this weekend and the team got better," commented Ramsey. "Being challenged by Tokai and responding to that challenge was a great way for us to end the tournament."
