UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - UCSB scored eight goals in each half while limiting the club from UC Davis to 4 second half goals on the way to a crucial victory at the UCSB Recreation Center sports complex turf. The Aggies took a two goal lead to start the game and also led 4-1 eight minutes into the game. The Gauchos then turned it on and scored seven unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead with six minutes left in the half and never looked back. UCSB outscored the Aggies 8-2 in the first 28 minutes of the second half and led 16-8 before UC Davis scored two goals late in the game.

UCSB freshman attacker Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) scored ten goals to lead all scorers. It was a battle of leading scorers in some ways today. UC Davis junior attacker K.C. Hill (Novata, CA). Hill was the leading goal scorer in the WWLL entering the game and Pelland was second. With Pelland netting ten and Hill her normal four Pelland took over as the leading scorer and now averages 4.54 goals per game. Another leader in the statistical category is senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA). The attacker averages 3.95 assists per game to lead the WWLL and she had four more assists today along with a goal of her own.

The UCSB defense clamped down after allowing the Aggies four early goals and took care of the back door cutting by UC Davis that hurt them early. Senior Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) had 14 saves for 63.6%. Cailan Howey (Charlotte, NC) had four caused turnovers and five ground balls on defense. The senior All-American candidate drew a charge in the middle of the second half that fired up everyone on her team.  Senior Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) had six draw controls and the entire UCSB midfield took over that area of the field for the last 50 minutes of the game. Even when the Aggies won a draw control the Gauchos doubled quickly and took it away.

UCSB improved to 9-4 overall and plays again on Sunday when they host San Diego State at 10:00am. UC Davis dropped to 5-5, played their final regular season game and waits to hear if they qualify for the WWLL Championship Tournament April 16th & 17th at UCSB. The Gauchos appear to have qualified and wait to hear their seed and opponent in the quarterfinals.
