Santa Clara Gets 11-10 Win Over UCSBApr. 4, 2016 Santa Clara, CA - UCSB had a chance at the end but could not get the equalizing goal in a game at 12th ranked Santa Clara and lost 11-10 on Senior Day for the Broncos. The game was tied four times and both teams enjoyed two goal leads at times but neither team ever led by more than two goals. The Gauchos scored four unanswered goals after falling behind 3-5 late in the first half and led 7-5 ten minutes into the second half. Freshman Rachael Shaw (San Ramon, CA) started the run with a free position goal toward the end of the first half that pulled UCSB to within one goal at halftime. The score at intermission was 4-5 in favor of the Broncos. The UCSB defense was a team affair and the group did a nice job limiting the potent Santa Clara offense opportunities. The Broncos were playing with everyone healthy for the first time since their February 14th win over then top ranked Michigan. UCSB senior goalie Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) had 14 saves for 56% while senior defender Cailan Howey (Charlotte, NC) had 5 caused turnovers, 3 ground balls and 2 draw controls to go plus 10 on the day. UCSB didn't wait long to strike at the start of the second half and senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View) assisted junior Maddy Montague (Aliso Viejo, CA) who tied it at 5-5. Shaw scored unassisted and senior Kelsey Trepa (San Marcos, CA) also scored unassisted. Shaw also snagged two of her 4 draw controls in the game during the run. After the four goal run UCSB led 7-5 with 20 minutes left in the game. Unfortunately Santa Clara then went on their own four goal run and took back their two goal lead. It was 9-7 and the Gauchos found themselves in another two goal hole but 13 minutes of playing time to make it up. UCSB and Santa Clara traded goals inside the very next 51 seconds in a flurry of action at both ends. Sabbag fed freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) and Santa Clara scored unassisted. Both goals took less than a minute and it was 8-10. A short time later it took thirty seconds for the Gauchos to score two goals to tie the game 10-10. UCSB had climbed back from three different two goal deficits (0-2, 3-5, 8-10) to tie it. At 20:09 Trepa scored unassisted on a drive down the middle and then at 20:39 Pelland dodged and dished to freshman Sarah Griffin (Garden City, CA) who whipped a nice bounce shot past Santa Clara junior goalie Maggie Von Massenhausen (San Jose, CA). The game was tied for the fourth time with just over 9 minutes remaining. Santa Clara then got their game winner with 3:09 to play on a backdoor cut by lefty sophomore midfielder Hannah Press (Los Gatos, CA) for a pass from junior attacker Sam Simonich (Danville, CA). Both teams traded shots and both goalies made saves after that. In the face of a slow-down a UCSB double team against the Santa Clara offense forced the ball to the ground and the Gauchos successfully cleared it to have possession at the offensive end. Then a quick Santa Clara double team and possession for the rest of the game gave the Broncos the win. The loss dropped UCSB to 8-4 and halted a run at the top seed in the WWLL Championships April 16 - 17. The Gauchos wrap up the regular season when they host the club from UC Davis on Saturday at Noon and the club from San Diego State on Sunday at 10:00am. Both games are in UCSB Harder Stadium. Santa Clara improved to 7-3 and travels to Cal Poly SLO on Saturday in a game that will decide a top two seed on championship weekend.
