UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - The Gauchos won 14-9 over visiting University of San Diego in a Friday afternoon home game at the UCSB Recreation Center turf to improve to 7-3 overall. UCSB won both halves but the Toreros never really went away until the Gauchos surged ahead outscoring San Diego 5-1 over a 21 minute span in the second half. Earlier in the game UCSB used a 5-0 run to to take an 8-3 lead with nine minutes left in the first half but the Toreros scored three straight to get to within two goals at 8-6. Freshman Rachael Shaw (San Ramon, CA) led in goal scoring for UCSB with 4 goals and 2 assists while senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) had 3 goals and 4 assists for a 7 point performance.

Final exams for the UCSB winter quarter starting the day after the game may have taken some luster off the contest for the Gauchos but they persevered. By doing so UCSB halted a five game winning streak by the Toreros, who are in first place in WWLL South. Senior Sarah Zuccaro (Los Gatos, CA) scored four goals for San Diego with her dodge and re-dodge tactic. UCSB had prepared for it but Zuccaro still got her goals. UCSB senior goalie Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) had 8 saves playing most of the game before stepping aside for sophomore Kaitlyn Pike (Seaholm, MI) who had 2 saves closing out the game. Senior Kelsey Trepa (San Diego, CA) had 2 draw controls, 1 ground ball and 4 caused turnovers for a fine game in the midfield.

"This game reminded me we want to be dynamic and we need to engage each other in that conversation more often," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after observing the Gauchos looked a little flat.

"We are at our best when we're aggressive, when we play defense before our player gets the ball, when we go for the loose balls and when we go into the game with the mindset we're going to outshoot the other team."

UCSB did some of that today but it was enough for the Gauchos to improve to 7-3. They now have two BYE weekends with a week of final exams and then extended time off before classes resume on March 28th. UCSB will next play Chico State in a neutral site game at Stanford University on Saturday, April 2nd, at Noon.  San Diego dropped to 6-4 and hosts city rival San Diego State on March 16th.
