Gauchos Get 12-6 Success Over UC BerkeleyFeb. 28, 2016 Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB scored the first six goals of the game and later led 11-3 with 11:42 remaining in a home game with the club from UC Berkeley. The Gauchos won 12-6. The Golden Bears won the first draw but the UCSB defense held them without a shot for almost four minutes before a successful double team got the ball on the ground and UCSB scooped it up. The Gauchos scored on their first possession and then in a flurry of goals led 6-0 at 13:13 into the first half. The Gauchos subbed extensively today, all the way into the bench, after the early success. Toward the end of the game Berkeley outscored UCSB 3-1 in the last 9:21 but the Gauchos gained possession on the final draw and ran out most of the final 2:47 to finish with the win. UCSB used twenty-two players in the game today. In an unusual three-way weekend result. UCSB beat Berkeley who had beaten 10th ranked Cal Poly yesterday who had beaten UCSB on Friday. In the series among the three teams everyone finished 1-1 in three days of play. It will create a knot in the overall WWLL standings for the 6 team post-season conference championship tournament. UC Berkeley sophomore goalie Chloe Carnes (Richmond, VA) had 19 saves yesterday to help her team get a 6-5 win over Cal Poly but the Gaucho offense sliced through the Bears defense and outshot them 31-16, with 25 shots on goal and finishing 12 times. Carnes, who was recruited to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at CAL but joined their club this year, had 13 saves for 52% but UCSB worked hard enough for quality shots to shoot 48%. UCSB netminder Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) turned in a second strong performance in the goal. The senior had 8 saves and only 6 goals allowed for a save percentage of 57.1%. Ryan can thank her defense for limiting the Berkeley shooters good looks at the cage and facing only 14 shots on goal. Gaucho senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) led all scorers with 1 goal and 8 assiststs. Freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) was on the end of three of those assists but, also, eight different UCSB players scored goals. At one point midway through the second half the Gauchos were up 9-2 and faced a little surge from UC Berkeley. The Bears peppered UCSB with some shots but were held to only one goal and then UCSB scored two more to go up 11-3. UCSB improved to 5-3 overall while UC Berkeley dropped to 2-3 overall. Up next for the Gauchos is a WWLL Central Division game at UCLA. Berkeley next plays when they host Santa Clara on March 11th in a WWLL North Division game.
