Tenth Ranked Cal Poly Tops UCSB 9-6Feb. 26, 2016 San Luis Obispo, CA - The Gauchos fought back from a two goal halftime deficit to take a 6-5 lead with 12 minutes remaining in a game at league rival Cal Poly SLO. After some back and forth play the Mustangs took advantage of a turnover in the midfield on a UCSB clearing attempt to tie the game at 6-6. They then won the draw and scored a goal to go up 7-6 about two minutes later. Until that turnover and the resulting two quick goals the Gauchos had held Cal Poly scoreless for 18 minutes with inspiring defense and key saves by senior Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT). Following the Mustangs going up by a goal UCSB ended up chasing the game with time running out and lost 9-6 in the WWLL Central Division game against 10th ranked Cal Poly. Ryan finished with 13 saves for 59.1% but by the end the Gauchos had to play defense too many times against a top ten team after pulling themselves out of their first half hole. Senior midfielder Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) had 6 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers and a goal for UCSB. The Mustangs were led by their leading scorer, sophomore Julia Sargent (New London, NH). The midfielder led Cal Poly with a 3.29 goals per game average in their first seven game and she scored four goals against the Gauchos. She was matched by freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) of UCSB who also scored four goals. Senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) had four assists for UCSB. UCSB dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in WWLL Central. The Gauchos host the club from UC Berkeley on Sunday at 10:00am. Cal Poly improved to 6-2, 1-1 and has a quick turnaround. The Mustangs play UC Berkeley on Saturday at 2:00pm.
