Santa Barbara, CA - The Gauchos outshot University of Washington 37-27 and had a six goal run in the middle of the second half that earned UCSB a 17-12 non-conference win in the final game of the Santa Barbara Shootout for both teams. UCSB had a 7-3 lead 12 minutes into the game but the Huskies outscored them 4-2 over the next 13 minutes and pulled within two goals at 9-7. The Gauchos finished the half with two goals to lead 11-7 at halftime.

"They never really went away and were going to goal relentlessly," commented UCSB Head Coach Paul Ramsey.  "They drew a lot of fouls by doing it."

By going to goal early in the second half Washington scored three unanswered and the UCSB lead was only 11-10 with 23 minutes remaining in what looked to be a nail biter. Queue the Gauchos midfield snaring draw controls, the defense stepping up to stop the Washington dodgers and senior goalie Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) making three of her nine saves. Fueled by those combos the offense scored six unanswered goals and led 17-10 with 8:40 remaining. The Huskies didn't stop, though, and scored the final two goals before UCSB controlled the ball and finished the game possessing it.

Some of the fouls the Huskies drew by going hard to goal were yellow card penalties called on the Gauchos and there were three of them. During the three different two minute penalties, adding up to six minutes of UCSB being down a player, Washington scored two goals. The Gaucho defense held well only allowing two goals over six minutes of player-up offense by the Huskies.

UCSB freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) led all scorers with 7 goals on 10 shots to shoot a season high 70%. Pelland also had 2 assists for a total of nine points. Senior Kelsey Trepa (San Diego, CA) had 4 goals and 1 assist. Freshman Rachael Shaw (San Ramon, CA) grabbed five draw controls while senior Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) had 3 draw controls and 3 ground balls.

The Gauchos improved to 4-2 and have a BYE weekend before resuming Western Women's Lacrosse League play travling to play Cal Poly SLO on February 26th.
