Santa Barbara, CA - The Gauchos blanked the club from USC 5-0 in the second half on their way to a 16-4 win in the home opener for UCSB. The Gauchos led 6-1 and 11-2 before mostly shutting it down on offense and going with some possession work and having more of a defensive focus. Senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) made her 2016 season debut after missing both games in Arizona due to illness. The attacker contributed a nine point game to lead all scorers with 2 goals and 7 assists. Close behind her was freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) with 5 goals and 1 assist for 6 points. UCSB outshot the Trojans 26-11 and controlled the draw 15 out of 22 times.
Senior Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) stepped in for the second half replacing sophomore Cyrena Malkowski (Lake Forest, CA). Malkowski made three saves in the first half. Then in the second half, at the same time the UCSB defense allowed only four second half shots by the Trojans, Ryan saved all four shots she faced. The team defense by UCSB was the story of the second half again for the third game in a row. The Gauchos have allowed only five goals total in the second half of their three games so far this season. Overall UCSB has outscored opponents 16-5 in second halves and 44-21 overall in three games in a mix of up-tempo and settled play.
UCSB resumes play on a quick turnaround this week as the underdog. Up next for the unranked Gauchos is a match-up with 4th ranked University of Michigan (1-0). The Wolverines are the defending WCLA National Champions. The game is at 7:00pm on Thursday at the UCSB Recreation Center Turf.
