Arizona Post Game

Tucson, AZ - UCSB broke open a 7-7 tie with a defensive effort that held the Wildcats scoreless for the first seventeen minutes of the second half on their way to 13-9 season opening win on the road. The Gauchos outscored Arizona 6- 2 in the second half with a series of runs and possessions and some smart play. Following a back and forth first half that saw the Gauchos down 1-3 six minutes into the game UCSB rallied. From the point they were down by two goals UCSB outscored the Wildcats 12-6 over 54 minutes of play. Eight Gauchos got in on the scoring with freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) contributing 3 goals and 2 assists. Senior Cailan Howey (Providence, NC) scored 2 goals and had 2 assists in her offensive debut.

The balanced scoring was good for UCSB but the stifling second half defense and some aggressive go get it style of play by defenders turned the tide. During the 17 minute stretch the Gauchos held Arizona scoreless there was a 4 minute stand with seemingly no Wildcat opportunities. They were stifled and UCSB led 11-7. Ultimately in that one stand UCSB forced the ball to the ground and were off and running onto transition before a midfield turnover and a fastbreak gave Arizona their first goal of the second half. That was the possible life for the Wildcats and they added one more to pull within two goals but UCSB responded with two more of their own and then finished the game with the ball to get the win. Sophomore Cyrena Malkoswki (Lake Forest, CA) had 10 saves while alllowing only 5 goals in a relief effort. Junior Michaela Forte (San Diego, CA) had five ground balls and a draw control for UCSB. Freshman Rachael Shaw (San Ramon, CA) had 7 draw controls, 4 ground balls and scored a goal.

UCSB became 1-0 with the win while Arizona dropped to 0-1. The Gauchos continue their road trip with a game at Arizona State University before returning home to Santa Barbara.
