Gauchos Schedule Includes Defending National Champion Michigan
Santa Barbara, CA - The UCSB women's lacrosse club schedule is released and the Gauchos will face five pre-season ranked teams in 2016. The schedule includes five teams that went to the WCLA National Championship Tournament. The biggest name opponent might be the defending national champion club from University of Michigan. UCSB will host them on February 11th. Earlier than that date the first action of the season comes on the road in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Fresno State on January 23rd. Following that test UCSB will scrimmage Grand Canyon University in Phoenix on January 29th. The regular season opener for UCSB is at University of Arizona on January 30th. That road trip also has the Gauchos at Arizona State on January 31st.
Home games are plentiful when UCSB returns from the road. In February USC, Michigan, Colorado State and University of Washington will all test the Gauchos on their home turf. In the middle of that stretch UCSB plays an exhibition game with Rikkyo University of Tokyo. After a BYE weekend a short trip up Highway 101 puts UCSB playing Cal Poly at the start of alternating two away games and two home games. Following facing the Mustangs the Gauchos host the club from UC Berkeley, travel to UCLA and then host University of San Diego over three weeks. April starts with a road trip to Northern California to play Chico State and Santa Clara before another home stand. UCSB wraps up the regular season hosting the clubs from UC Davis and San Diego State. Mid-April UCSB is hosting their conference championship tournament this season. Should the Gauchos qualify they will get to play at home in the WWLL Championship Tournament April 16th & 17th. The winner of the WWLL championship game receives an automatic qualifier spot in the WCLA National Championship Tournament and getting there is an aim the Gauchos have this year. UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey likes the schedule but realizes it's going to be a test for his team. "When I look at it on paper it seems a little scary coming off our 10-9 season but having seen us play in the fall gives me the confidence we can be successful with this schedule, says Ramsey.
