Anne HersmanSanta Barbara, CA - Two new assistant coaches join the UCSB women's lacrosse club this fall. Anne Hersman (Adrian College '12) and Katelyn McAleer (Robert Morris University '14) will take up assistant coaching responsibilities the first of September. Hersman is a native of Cincinatti, Ohio who attended Adrian after a prep career at Sycamore High School where her team won the state championship in 2007. Hersman was a defender for the John Sung coached NCAA DIII Bulldogs team that appeared in two NCAA DIII post-season tournaments. The former defender graduated with honors from Adrian and double majored in Mathematics and Physical Education. Hersman will be leaving her position with Outward Bound to join the Gauchos. Prior to working for Outward Bound Hersman coached at Tecumseh High School in Michigan and was a college lacrosse official. Hersman started officiating in 2008 and advanced herself to a District Rating (Level 3 of 5) and worked college games at the NCAA DIII level before joining the North Carolina Outward Bound staff.

Katelyn McAleerMcAleer grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland and earned her B.S. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, Cum Laude, at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. Recruited to play attack and midfield for the Colonials McAleer's playing career was short-lived due to an injury. The 2014 graduate transitioned by working for head coach Katy Phillips as a coach for her Pittsburgh Premiere Lacrosse Club 2012 through 2014. This early introduction to coaching while still a college student followed a prep career at Our Lady Of Good Counsel in Washington, DC. McAleer played attack and sometimes midfield for the Falcons who were a combined 68-14 over four years and won four straight DC WCAC titles under head coach Michael Haight. McAleer comes to UCSB after coaching for the Coast to Coast Lacrosse Club in Los Angeles and the LA Wave.

The Gauchos have one more assistant coach position to fill before their staff is complete. One of the three assistant coaches will have the primary role of B Team head coach. The two other assistant coaches will assume assistant coach roles for both teams. All three assistant coaches will be tasked with coaching any of the teams at any time, including games and practices, to help unify both teams in the same program. UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey will meet with all three assistant coaches in early September to have roles set by the first day of practice on September 28th.

"We have some great coaching talent coming to us with Anne and Katelyn," commented Ramsey. "They also both exude positivity and it shows in their coaching style and interaction with players."

UCSB has a third assistant position open and is looking for someone who will come in and coach the goalies on both teams. The Gauchos are looking for someone else who has the personality to want to devote time to players on both teams.

"The final assistant coach position is advertised on LaxPower.com so anyone interested can read more about it there," added Ramsey.

UCSB coaches will also be filling community roles starting this year. Weekly girls lacrosse development and outreach throughout Santa Barbara will include teaching lacrosse at local elementary schools with P.E. lessons, coordinating and staffing youth girls lacrosse after school programs for the SBGLA, rotating through three high school practices on Mondays in the spring and coaching Mission Lacrosse Club at tournaments fall, winter and summer.
