UCSB Positioned To Run With Thirty Newcomers

Santa Barbara, CA - A record number of newcomers are joining the UCSB women's lacrosse club for 2015-16. The increasing popularity of lacrosse and the exponential rise in the standing of UC Santa Barbara in numerous academic indexes have intersected. Nine of the newcomers were recruited by head coach Paul Ramsey and fifteen were accepted to the university and then invited to join the team.

Nineteen freshmen and three transfers will compete for placement and starting positions on the UCSB A & B teams this fall. Try-outs for A & B team placement start on Monday, September 28th, the first full week of school in the quarter system.

An additional six players are enrolling at SBCC and will train with UCSB while redshirting and working in the classroom to transfer. This is an operating change from past efforts at having a small SBCC squad train and compete on their own. In this new plan for matriculating two year college transfers the Gauchos are parking prospects at SBCC who intend to transfer to UCSB. The SBCC women's lacrosse club will not compete in 2015-16 and, instead, those players attending SBCC who are on track to transfer to UCSB will train with the Gauchos. They will not play in WWLL or WCLA games until they transfer but will be part of the program.

The UCSB 'A' Team roster was a little thin the past two seasons and the normal run & gun style of Gaucho past suffered. Ramsey likes the new numbers and brought this class in by relaying his firm convictions the program and the university merited choosing UCSB. He states that while some have been recruited starting early in their high school careers and others have recently jumped on board it's all wide open at try-outs. 

"While it's easy to get wrapped up in who was recruited and their background before coming here we want everyone to come in and compete their hardest and make us better," says Ramsey.  "What matters most now in that regard is how quickly everyone bonds and how competitive everyone is on the field at practice." 

UCSB will be tested early. The Gauchos play their first national team in twenty-two years when they host New Zealand on October 23rd at 7:00pm. The Kiwis are ranked seventh in the world. While UCSB have hosted Japanese college teams of late they last played a true national team in 1992. That year the Gauchos took on then second world ranked Australia in UCSB Harder Stadium when they stopped in Calfifornia on their way to the east coast. The Australian team featured a young Jen Adams, age 15, on her way to incredible performances on tour before eventually starring at University of Maryland and for Australia in four World Cups.
