Gauchos Almost Catch 6th Ranked Cal Poly SLOApr. 18, 2015 La Jolla, CA - UCSB almost caught the 6th ranked Mustangs in a comeback bid that pulled the Gauchos to within a goal with 14 minutes to play. Cal Poly held on for the win and added two insurance goals as UCSB pressured out trying to get the ball back for a chance at a tying goal. UCSB were down by four goals when they scored two straight to get it to 5-3 in favor of Cal Poly. The Mustangs scored three unanswered of their own to push their lead to 8-3 and were enjoying their largest lead of the game. UCSB started to execute on offense and a feed from junior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) to sophomore Melissa Hsu (Danville, CA) started a four goal run. Four assisted goals in a row made it 8-7 in favor of Cal Poly with 14:41 remaining in the game. During the comeback the Gauchos had outscored Cal Poly 4-2 for fifteen minutes and 4-0 for ten minutes. UCSB took three more shots over the next twelve minutes but were turned away. With about two minutes left the Mustangs had the ball and were holding it. The first Gaucho attempt to break the stall resulted in an unassisted goal by Cal Poly and then so did the second, providing the final 10-7 margin. UCSB will close the season with a 10:00am Sunday consolation game with University of San Diego. The UCSB 'B' Team upset UC Davis 'B' 15-8 in the B Division semifinal and they will take on Cal Poly 'B' in the WWLL B Division championship game at 10:00am on Sunday.
