Third Ranked UCLA Wins Quarterfinal With UCSBApr. 18, 2015 La Jolla, CA - Third ranked UCLA took a 3-0 lead eleven minutes into a WWLL Quarterfinal with UCSB and never looked back. A strong offensive performance by the Bruins fueled by constant looks to the cage gave UCLA a 7-3 halftime lead. They redoubled their efforts for that same mindset in the second half and won going away, 15-3. A pass from defender Cailan Howey (Providence, NC) to a wide open Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) at 20:41 in the first half brought UCSB to within striking distance at 4-2 in favor of UCLA. The Bruins then responded immediately with a draw control by UCLA sophomore Gretchen Kiep (Haddonfield, NJ) that she both drew and then kept herself to take the ball and weave her way down the field to score an unassisted goal just 13 seconds later. UCLA outscored UCSB 10-1 the rest of the way. The Bruins advance to an afternoon semifinal with San Diego State. The Aztecs upset 6th ranked Cal Poly SLO 12-11 in their quarterfinal. The Gauchos will face the 6th ranked Mustangs in a consolation game at 2:00pm.
