UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - The Gauchos gutted out a tough win over University of Washington at the 27th Annual Santa Barbara Shootout. UCSB won 12-11. It was the fourth game of the tournament for UCSB but only the second game for the late arriving Huskies in the set schedule Shootout format. The fresher legs of Washington showed in the second half but the Gauchos were mentally tough enough to persevere. Two UCSB starters were out with injuries for the game and four others gutted through strained muscles as the Gauchos rotated four reserves in and out of the game.

The Gauchos outshot the Huskies 23-18 and UCSB sophomore Melissa Hsu (Danville, CA) led all scores with 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points. UCSB held a slight edge on draw controls, winning 14 of 25. Goal keeping was even on both sides with 7 saves apiece for each team but the Gaucho offense generated more shots and the 7-4 lead they built through the first half carried them to the finish.

UCSB improved to 4-3 overall and Washington, favored to win the NWWLL, dropped to 2-3 with one game remaining in Santa Barbara with Michigan State. The Gauchos play next on Friday night when they resume Western Women's Lacrosse League play at University of San Diego in a 7:00pm game at Manchester Field.
