UCSB Edged By 6th Ranked Colorado 13-12Feb. 14, 2015 Santa Barbara, CA - The 14th ranked club from University of Colorado, Boulder caught up to UCSB in the second half and then won by a goal on a score with 48 seconds remaining in the game in a thriller at the 27th Annual Santa Barbara Shootout. UCSB led 7-5 at halftime but started slow coming out of the break and the Buffalos tied it about ten minutes into the second half. Colorado eventually led by as many as two goals but the Gauchos rallied to tie the game 12-12. The Buffalos won the draw and after running some time off the clock it was a nice pass inside that resulted in the winning goal. UCSB was leading 7-3 when sophomore Melissa Hsu (Danville, CA) scored on an 8 meter with 3:36 remaining in the first half. A little bit later, during the last 1:26 of the first half, the Gauchos were playing one short after a yellow card and Colorado took full advantage. The Buffalos solved the UCSB man down defense with an assisted goal at 20 seconds left on the clock, won the draw and were still man up on the non-releasable UCSB yellow card. A Gaucho foul put Colorado on the line and they scored with 4 seconds on the clock to make it a 7-5 halftime lead for UCSB. The penalty time carried over for 34 seconds into the second half so the Gauchos were still a man down when play resumed. Colorado found the open player again just 25 seconds in and capitalized on being man up for two minutes with three goals. During their man up situation Colorado trimmed a 4 goal deficit to 1 goal and it was 7-6 UCSB. Momentum stayed their way for three more goals and Colorado were up 9-7. UCSB was right there and maybe in many ways better than Colorado when they were even. Aside from three goals given up playing a man down UCSB outscored the Buffalos 12-10. During man down Colorado outscored the Gauchos 3-0 and that made the difference. Back at even UCSB fought back and outscored the Buffalos 3-2 to tie it at 11-11 with a little more than 13 minutes remaining. Both teams traded goals to a 12-12 score before Colorado eventually scored an assisted goal with 48 seconds remaining, won the final draw and eked out the win to edge UCSB 13-12. The Gauchos won 14 of 27 draw controls in the game and outshot Colorado 23-22. UCSB junior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) led all scorers with 6 goals and 1 assist. Freshman goalies Kaitlyn Pike (Seaholm, MI) and Cyrena Malkowski (Lake Forest, CA) split the game for UCSB. Pike had 2 saves and Malkowski had 5 saves. Junior Mari Cajandig (Davis, CA) had 6 draw controls and 4 ground balls. UCSB dropped to 3-3 overall and has one Shootout game remaining when they take on University of Washington at 12 Noon on Sunday. Colorado improved to 2-1 and plays University of San Diego on Sunday.
