UCLA Tops UCSB In WWLL SemifinalApr. 19, 2014 Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB fought back from being down by five goals in the first eight minutes of the game and got as close as two goals with about 8 minutes left before UCLA finally prevailed 14-11. The Gauchos had a chance when they pulled to within two goals at 13-11 after junior Lindsay Alex (Tustin, CA) assisted sophomore Amanda Shoemaker (Poway, CA) with 7:26 left in the game. After allowing six UCLA goals in eight minutes UCSB played 52 minutes of tough defense to force turnovers and slow the potent UCLA offense enough to open a window of hope for a comeback. The Gauchos did come back, outscoring 5th ranked UCLA 6-5 in the second half, but could not come back all the way. Over the last 52 minutes of the game UCSB outscored UCLA 10-8. The Bruins iced it with some possession running around, an unassisted goal by sophomore Sam Fletcher (Vienna, VA) with 3:59 remaining and then some more running around to seal the win. Senior Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) led UCSB with four goals and tied for high scoring with UCLA freshman midfielder Gretchen Kiep (Haddonfield, NJ). Senior Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) scored twice and also had 4 draw controls and 3 ground balls. Senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) had 11 saves. The Gauchos will play University of San Diego at 12:00pm on Sunday in the WWLL third place game at the UCSB Recreation Center Turf. Santa Clara won their semifinal with the Toreros 15-11 and will play UCLA for the WWLL Division One championship at 1:00pm in UCSB Harder Stadium.
