Second Half Run Separates UCSB From Bears In 15-10 Win

UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - Ten Gauchos scored in a 15-10 win over the club from UC Berkeley in the first game back from final exams and spring break for UCSB. The 17th ranked Gauchos used a five goal run in the second half to lead 14-8 with 6 minutes left in the game. Five different players combined for 5 goals and 3 assists in 7 minutes that put the game away. The Bears scored the first goal of the game but UCSB outscored them 5-3 the rest of the half to lead 5-4 at halftime. The Gauchos scored three straight to open the second half and led 8-4 with 28 minutes remaining. Berkeley scored two of their next four on free position shots and pulled to 9-8 before UCSB outscored them 6-2 to finish the game.

UCSB won 16 of the 26 draw controls and outshot Berkeley 34-22. Sophomore Amanda Shoemaker (San Diego, CA) led UCSB with 4 goals and 1 assist and junior Lindsay Alex (Tustin, CA) had 5 assists. Two Gauchos had two goals each and 7 UCSB players scored a goal apiece. Senior Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) had 5 draw controls, 2 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers. Senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) had 6 first half saves and finished the game with 10 saves for 50%. Senior Tracy Paulson (Seal Beach, CA) scored 5 goals for the Bears. Freshman goalie Jalissa Pressley (Chula Vista, CA) had 13 saves for 46.4% for UC Berkeley.

UCSB improved to 6-5 overall while Berkeley dropped to 3-5. The Gauchos play next on Sunday at Noon when they host the club from UC Davis. UC Davis played at Cal Poly SLO today and upset the 11th ranked Mustangs 9-6. UC Berkeley plays Sunday at 11:00am at Cal Poly SLO.
