UCSB WLAX File PhotoTempe, AZ - UCSB broke open a close game at Arizona State University with an 8 goal run over a 16 minute span in the second half to win going away over the Sun Devils. The run was true Gaucho lacrosse style with fastbreaks off draw controls, the defense clamping down and giving the ball back to their offense and the UCSB team making it happen at the offensive end with a mix of both up tempo and settled play. Earlier in the game it didn't come so easy for the Gauchos but effort and enthusiasm carried them through a rocky start.  It was 7-5 UCSB at halftime but only with a closing moments unassisted goal by senior Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) to give the Gauchos a two goal cushion.  Hubbert scored solo on a quick striking second half goal too with a scorcher during a fastbreak just 12 seconds after the intermission. The midfielder faked the pass to the open low attacker and then drove in to bury her own shot. The play sparked UCSB and later it was Hubbert who assisted Amanda Shoemaker (Poway, CA) on a fast break for the first goal of the 8 goal run.  The final score was 19-8 UCSB.

Early in the game the Gauchos led 4-1 but ASU fought back to get to within one goal.  Shoemaker scored unassisted to make it 5-3 and ASU responded to make it 5-4. Shortly thereafter Hubbert scored and then the Sun Devils scored again to get it back within one. It looked to be one of those games. ASU never led but really kept hanging around with a scrappy style of play. Hubbert scored with 7 seconds left in the first half for that 7-5 halftime score. Hubbert scored the last two goals of the first half for UCSB and then the first two goals of the second half.

"Everyone picked it up in the second half but I was really impressed by the way Katie kept us glued together at a crucial time and took care of it herself on the field and then also involved her teammates when it was appropriate," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after the game.

Senior Megan Hughes (Tustin, CA) had 11 saves with 7 of them coming in the first half. ASU took 15 shots in the first half, a number quite a bit higher than UCSB would like to have allowed. The Sun Devils outshot UCSB 15-10 for the first half and then UCSB outshot ASU 17-8 in the second half. Hubbert exited early but finished with 6 points on 5 goals and 1 assist.  Shoemaker scored 5 goals and junior Lindsay Alex (Santa Ana, CA) had 2 goals and 3 assists. Jillian Sanders (Westchester, PA) led ASU with four goals.

UCSB outscored ASU 12-3 in the second half to improve to 2-0. The Sun Devils dropped to 0-1. The Gauchos play next in the opening game of the Santa Barbara Shootout when they host 8th ranked University of Pittsburgh. ASU plays their first game of the Shootout with Miami of Ohio on Friday.
