The first coach in UCSB women's lacrosse history was Frank Garahan (UMass, Amherst '75) who was previously the head women's lacrosse coach at University of Massachussetts, Amherst for the 1976, 1977 and 1978 seasons. Garahan moved to Santa Barbara to work at the Biltmore Hotel & Spa and coached UCSB for two seasons, during the 1979-80 and 1980-81 academic years.

Garahan played attack at UMass, Amherst for the legendary Dick Garber who now has Garber Field on campus named after him and is in the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. It was Garber who encouraged Garahan to coach the start-up women's program at UMass, Amherst and Garber supported the efforts of the then club women's lacrosse team at UMass, Amherst.

UCSB women's lacrosse benefitted greatly from Garber encouraging Garahan to involve himself in women's lacrosse.

Frank can be followed on his Twitter @fgarahan.
