Back from a two week hiatus for finals and spring break, the Bruins came back ready for a competitive weekend of games in San Diego.  The Bruins took on two teams from the South conference of the WWLL in UCSD and USD, improving to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in the WWLL this season.

After allowing the Tritons to score the first goal of the game, the Bruins never looked back, going on a 10-0 run over the next 22 minutes.  Sophomore Molly Tracy tallied three goals and added three groundballs to propel the Bruins during the run.  The Bruins had a solid lead at halftime, 10-4.  The second half was similar to the first, with the Bruins dictating much of the play.   However, a combined 26 turnovers allowed UCSD to hang around and add several goals for a final score of 17-9.  The Bruins dominated the midfield winning 22 of the total 28 draw controls, with freshman Sam Fletcher (3 goals) picking up 6 draw controls and junior Courtney Randall (3 goals) contributing 5.  The freshmen class had a large impact on the game with Luzdelia Caballero tallying 4 goals and Kaitlin Miller contributing 3 goals and an assist.

Sunday’s game against USD was a hard fought contest throughout.  After a 45-miunte delay to the start of the game, the Toreros came out strong opening up a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes.  However, the Bruins fought back quickly, jumping to a 4-3 lead over the next 4 minutes.  The pace of the game slowed down for the rest of the first half, with USD heading into half time with a 5-4 lead.  A theme throughout the game, and weekend, UCLA was able to consistently control the draw, winning 8 of 10 in the first half and 8 of 9 in the second, leading to additional possessions that would be key down the stretch.  UCLA and USD traded goals to open up the second half, with USD holding on to the lead 8-7 with ten minutes left to play.  The USD goalie came up with big saves throughout the game, but the Bruins countered with a strong ride to create turnovers in transition.  After an interception on the clear by Kate Armstrong, Tracy scored on a dodge from up top with 6:16 left to tie the game at 8.  The Bruins won the ensuing draw and moved the ball around on attack.  Caballero dodged from up top to put UCLA ahead 9-8 with 3:25 left.  Tracy grabbed the next draw control and the Bruins spread the field and ran out the clock for the victory.

Senior Margaret Nettleton returned from a concussion suffered earlier in the week at practice (did not play in Saturday’s game) to lead the Bruins to victory with solid decision making and strong midfield play to go along with 2 goals and an assist.  Tracy and sophomore defender Lindsey Perry each nabbed five draw controls on the day.  A solid defensive effort slowed down the Toreros in transition, with junior goalie Martine Ehrlich coming up with several big saves down the stretch.

The Bruins head into the final weekend of regular season play with games against crosstown rival USC (Saturday at 5 pm, at USC) and senior day against Cal Poly (Sunday at 2 pm, at UCLA).
