Bruins Drop to #4 Gauchos After Strong First HalfFeb. 23, 2013 After coming out slow against the #4 Gauchos, UCLA found itself down 5-1 just 5 minutes into the game. However, the Bruins picked up steam and mounted a comeback to tie the score 5-5 with 11:25 left in the half. Sloppy attack and midfield play left the Bruin defense with large task of holding out UCSB for the remainder of the half. The Gauchos held a slim lead 9-6 at halftime. However, once again, the Bruins opened the second half in a slump, allowing UCSB to score 5 consecutive goals before getting their only goal of the half from freshman Sam Fletcher (3g). Inconsistency on attack contributed to multiple turnovers, and combined with ill-timed fouls in the defensive end, resulted in 8m goals for UCSB. Once again, the Bruins were led by a strong showing by midfielders Margaret Nettleton (2 goals, 5 caused turnovers, 6 ground balls) and Molly Tracy (3 CT, 4 GB). The Bruins head up to Northern California next weekend for a league game against UC Berkeley at 3pm in Memorial Stadium.
