UCLA Improves to 6-1 With Wins Over Santa Clara and CalFeb. 27, 2012 Over the weekend, the Bruins improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the WWLL with two impressive wins. The Bruins took on then undefeated Santa Clara on Saturday, followed by the Cal Bears on Sunday. After a strong opening, the Broncos took an early 6-2 lead propelled by All-American Maggie Burke's three first half goals. Midfielder Margaret Nettleton netted two goals in the final 6 minutes of the period to bring the Bruins back within two at the half. Santa Clara started the second half with three quick goals, but the Bruins steadily fought back, eventually outscoring the Broncos 9-7 in the second half of regulation. The Bruins won the overtime 2-1 for a 15-14 win. Attacker Allie Simpson contributed 9 points (4 G, 5 A) to the game, while midfielder Amanda Martin shot a perfect 4-4 on the day. Freshman Molly Tracy led the Bruins' midfield defense with 4 caused turnovers and 2 ground ball controls, while senior Isabel Angell anchored the Bruins' defense down low. On Sunday, the Bruins faced another WWLL North opponent in Cal Club. UCLA took an early 4-0 lead, and maintained that lead throughout the first half. The Bruins came out of halftime fired up and held the Bears scoreless for a full 21 minutes, while increasing their lead to 11 goals. With a 17-6 advantage, the Bruins slowed down their offense and maintained control for a 17-9 final. Eight different Bruins put up points, and 9 of 17 goals were assisted. UCLA dominated the midfield, winning 22 of 28 draw controls over the course of the game. Senior Antoinette Brou led the way with 7 draw controls and 3 goals. Goalie Devon Comito continued to shine, tallying 28 saves across the weekend. The Bruins will travel to Chapman this Saturday for their first official WWLL match up with the Panthers, followed by a home game versus UC Davis Club on Sunday at noon.
