Bruins Go 2-1 At Santa Barbara ShootoutFeb. 20, 2012 UCLA had an exciting weekend of lacrosse in Santa Barbara, taking on 3 teams from 3 different WCLA leagues across the country. The Bruins started the annual shootout against a fired up Michigan State team on Friday evening, who managed an early 4-1 lead. UCLA fired back and held the Spartans scoreless over the next 48 minutes, eventually outscoring them 16-1 to finish with a convincing 17-5 win. Midfielder Margaret Nettleton led all scorers with 5 goals, while Attacker Allie Simpson led the Bruins in points (3 G, 4 A). Senior Allie Roe continued to dominate the midfield play, tallying 5 draw controls, 2 ground ball controls, and 2 goals of her own. Saturday morning, the Bruins faced a strong Georgia team in a rough 14-6 loss. UCLA failed to gain possession from the start, winning only 4 of 22 draw controls over the course of the game. The Bruins also struggled with their shooting percentage, converting just 6 of 19 shots on goal against Georgia goalie, Emily Seidel. Sophomore Courtney Randall stepped up for the Bruin offense with 2 goals and 1 assist, while Devon Comito was solid in the goal with 12 saves. The Bruins finished off the weekend with a dominant win against Oregon, overpowering the Ducks 14-3. Senior Morgan Oberstein took control in the midfield, tallying 2 caused turnovers, and a season high 9 ground ball controls with limited time on the field. UCLA's defensive pressure held Oregon to just 7 shots on goal. Seven different players put up points for the Bruins on offense, and 8 of 14 goals were assisted. UCLA moves to 4-1 in WCLA Division 1 play. Next up, the Bruins will face undefeated Santa Clara at home on Saturday followed by UC Berkeley on Sunday. Both games are at noon on the UCLA IM Field.
