UCLA Goes 2-1 at WWLL Championship WeekendThe 4th seeded Bruins took on the 5th seeded Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday in a rematch of their 13-12 win two weeks ago in regular season play. After taking an 8-6 lead at the break, the Bruins came out strong to the second half and increased their lead to 11-7 just 5 minutes in. The Mustangs turned up the heat and tied the game up with less than 3 minutes to play. The Bruins were held scoreless for the final 4 minutes, leaving them trailing by one at the final whistle of the 15-16 loss. Freshman Kelley McCarroll-Gilbert and junior Allie Simpson led the Bruin offense with 18 combined points. Apr. 18, 2011 The same day, UCLA faced yet another WWLL Central opponent in the second round. They previously bested the USC Trojans on April 6 in a 13-11 win. The Bruins came out determined to play a cleaner game, and ended the first half of play leading 13-4. USC couldn't dig themselves out of the deficit, for a final score of 19-9 in favor of the Bruins. Captain Morgan Oberstein netted 5 goals and junior Antoinette Brou powered through the midfield with 5 draw controls and 3 ground ball controls. On Sunday, the Bruins faced Arizona State to fight it out for a 5th place finish in the WWLL. All 17 players from UCLA's roster contributed to the match, for a final score of 14-13. McCarroll-Gilbert and Simpson once again led the offense with 16 combined points. Captain Izzy Angell led the Bruin defense with 5 ground ball controls and 2 caused turnovers. UCLA dominated Arizona State in their previous meeting on February 5 in an 18-7 victory. Following the Saturday afternoon games, the WWLL presented the 2011 Division 1 All-League Teams.
