8th Ranked Bruins Go 1-2 at Lindenwood InvitationalOver the weekend, the UCLA Bruins flew out to St. Charles, MO to take part in the 2011 Lindenwood Invitational, where they went 1-2 versus three out-of-league opponents. Apr. 11, 2011 UCLA took on the Michigan Wolverines on Friday to start the weekend. The Bruins did not come out strong, and dug themselves into a deep hole with a 3-10 deficit leading into the final 27 minutes of the game. The Bruins won only 3 of 12 draws and took a sparse 4 shots on goal in the first half. After a UCLA timeout was called with 27:05 left, the momentum of the game shifted and the Bruins outscored the Wolverines 8-3 for the next 25 minutes. With 2 minutes to go, Michigan led 13-11 and the Bruins pushed out into a high pressure defense. UCLA goalie, Devon Comito came up with an interception, but was unable to clear. Michigan repossessed and scored on the empty net, extending the lead to 3 with only 30 seconds remaining. This was the final goal of the game, resulting in an 11-14 loss. Junior Morgan Oberstein led the Bruin midfield with 4 goals, 1 assist, and 2 ground ball controls. The Bruins faced the University of Minnesota Gophers on Saturday, in a 16-9 victory. Oberstein led all scorers with 5 goals, while junior Allie Roe dominated the midfield with 7 draw controls, 2 ground ball controls, and 1 caused turnover. UCLA made a statement with the first half of play, taking a 10-3 lead and winning 10 of 14 draws. Minnesota fought back in the second half, but the Bruins pulled away for the 16-9 final. In their final match of the regular season, the Bruins played the Lindenwood Lions into double overtime at the Lions' home stadium Sunday morning. Lindenwood took an early 3-1 lead, but were held scoreless for the final 17 minutes of the first half during which the Bruins came back for a 3-3 tie at the break. With under 7 minutes to play, UCLA had an 8-7 lead, but Lindenwood scored at 1:07 on a free position to push the game into overtime. Both teams traded a goal each, ending the first 3 minutes at 9-9. After a scoreless second period, the game went into sudden death and Lindenwood put in the game winner with just 4 seconds left on the clock. Junior Allie Simpson had a standout game with 3 assists and 1 goal for the Bruins in the 9-10 loss. Allie Roe dominated the midfield for the second time that weekend, winning 5 draw controls. Next up, UCLA will head to Santa Barbara for the WWLL Division 1 Playoffs where they will likely face Cal Poly in a Central Division rematch in the first round.
