UCLA Finishes League Play With A 13-11 Win Over Southern California

Wednesday night, UCLA played their last WWLL game of the regular season across town at USC. The WWLL Central match stayed tight for the first 15:00. Goals were traded, and UCLA led 3-2 after the first quarter. A solid final 12:00 of play from the Bruins pushed them ahead 8-4 at the break.

With their starting center already absent from the game due to a school commitment, the Bruins took a huge blow when another starting midfielder, Allie Roe, was injured at the beginning of the second half. Due to the need for stitches, Roe could not re-enter the game for the final 25 minutes. The Trojans took advantage, outscoring the Bruins 4-1 in the first 10:00 of the second half. As the Bruins struggled for depth, sophomore Annette Pulliam rolled her ankle at the 15 minute mark, forcing the team to finish the game with just 3 healthy midfielders.

UCLA struggled with maintaining a consistent midfield presence, winning 10 of 26 draw controls and committing 18 turnovers over the course of the game. Junior Devon Comito had a significant performance in goal with 15 saves, but the rest of the Bruin defense had trouble slowing down strong drives from the determined USC offense in the second half.

Freshman Courtney Randall led the attack with 4 points, while junior Morgan Oberstein netted 3 goals to lead the Bruins in scoring. Sophomore Allie Steinberg fought hard for the defense, leading the team with 7 ground ball controls and 1 caused turnover.

The nationally-ranked Bruins improved to 6-4 in WCLA play. They will travel to St. Charles, Missouri on Friday to take on Michigan, Minnesota, and Lindenwood over the weekend in their final 3 games of the regular season.
