Bruins Upset 8th Ranked Cal Poly SLOIn their final home game of the season, the #11 Bruins took on the #8 Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday at noon. Cal Poly started the first 8 minutes of play with a 2-1 lead, but the Bruins answered with two free position goals to get in front, 3-2, and did not allow the Mustangs to take the lead again for the remainder of the game. At the half, UCLA led 8-6 after freshman Kelley McCarroll-Gilbert netted 2 goals in the last minute, both assisted by junior Allie Simpson. Apr. 3, 2011 The Bruins continued to maintain control of the match, going up 9-6 early, and then maintaining a two goal lead for the majority of the second half. The Mustangs put on some strong pressure in the final minutes, and were able to break a long Bruin possession and score with only 1:46 remaining. UCLA was able to maintain the 13-12 lead to finish out the game. The Bruins out-shot the Mustangs 30 to 26 and won 14 of 25 draw controls in the upset. Sophomore, Margaret Nettleton dominated the midfield with 2 goals, 5 ground ball controls and 3 draw controls. The pair of McCarroll-Gilbert and Simpson continued their strong offensive streak with 11 combined points. UCLA will finish up the regular season with four away games, starting with cross-town rivals USC this Wednesday night at 7PM. The Bruins travel to Missouri for the Lindenwood Invitational on Friday, where they'll face Michigan, Minnesota, and Lindenwood over the weekend.
