Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Feb. 21, 2011

UCLA fought through pouring rain on Friday night to defeat defending national champions, Colorado State, 8-7. The Bruins came out fired up despite the weather, and went up 6-0 in the first 23:00 of play. The Rams came back to score 3 quick goals in the final 2 minutes of the half, setting up a much closer second period. With the help of 4 goals from junior captain, Morgan Oberstein, and 13 total saves from junior Devon Comito, the Bruins hung on for the win.

The following day, UCLA faced Florida Club in what turned into another rainy match. Down two starters (captain Izzy Angell was out all weekend ill, and midfielder Allie Roe received an unexpected second yellow card the night before for an errant ground ball pickup), the Bruins went into the game with a 3 person bench, and fought hard to stay composed through some very rough play. Junior Allie Simpson had a season high 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) in the first half, which ended 5-8 in the Gators' favor. The Bruins laid on heavy defensive pressure throughout the second half, causing 7 total turnovers and holding the Gators scoreless in the final 10:00 of the game. Sinking only 6-22 shots on goal (in comparison with Florida's 12-18) UCLA did not finish on attack in the second half, and came up short in the 6-12 loss.

In their final game of the weekend, the Bruins took on the Texas Longhorns in a close 8-9 loss. After taking a 5-4 lead at the half, the Bruins couldn't maintain composure on their end of the field, and did not capitalize on shot opportunities, shooting only 8-23 over the course of the game. Texas led draw controls with 12, versus the Bruins' 7. Junior defender, Michelle Rice, had a standout game with 5 ground ball controls and 2 caused turnovers.

UCLA dropped to 2-3 overall, and remained 1-1 in WWLL competition. Up next for the Bruins is their second WWLL Central contest at Pepperdine, this Saturday at 1PM.
