The Bruins came out strong to the Santa Barbara Shoot Out over Valentine's Day weekend. Controlling 16 of 23 draws in their first game, UCLA started their regular season with a big win over pre-season #5 Michigan, 12-9. The two teams previously met in the 2009 season, first at the 2009 Santa Barbara Shoot Out (L 7-8), and second at the WDIA National Tournament (L 13-17).

The second day of competition in Santa Barbara was equally intense, with #19 Pittsburgh at 1PM, followed by #6 Florida at 7PM. The Bruins began their Saturday, with a 15-5 trouncing of Pittsburgh, led by senior captain, Lauren Ariniello's 6 goals, and sophomore, Devon Comito's 6 ground ball controls.

The Florida Gators appeared to be a much tougher match for the Bruins, and came out to UCLA's 2nd game of the day with 3 early unanswered goals. However, after a quick timeout to regroup, the Bruins found their stride, beginning with an unassisted drive from rookie, Rebecca Trees. A 9-1 scoring run followed, and the Bruins ended the half with a 9-4 lead. The Gators weren't able to answer, and UCLA ended the night with their third win of the weekend, 13-7.

The Bruins finished the weekend with a 1-goal loss to Lindenwood. Both teams traded goals throughout the first half. The Lions broke open a lead early in the second, going up 8-4 with a 3-goal run. With 21:00 left, the Bruins turned on the heat and held the Lions scoreless for the remainder of the game. Senior captain, Hayley Wheeler, netted 3 goals in the last 7 minutes, but it wasn't enough to catch the Lions for a final score of 7-8.

Check back for more game updates, stats, and recaps as the 2010 regular season progresses. Next up, the Bruins travel up to Northern California to play Santa Clara and Chico State.
