UCLA Storm Through Arizona, Win Streak at SevenMar. 2, 2014 The Bruins took a weekend trip to play WWLL South teams in Arizona. Though the forecast predicted rain and thunderstorms throughout the weekend, the weather and fields held up long enough for both games to be played. On Saturday, a sluggish start against the University of Arizona allowed the Wildcats to keep the game close through the first half. At halftime, the score was 9-7, as the Bruins held a narrow lead. However, much of the play was dominated by midfielder Sam Fletcher’s ability to control the draw at will, as the Bruins won 16 of 21 draws with Fletcher at center. UCLA was unable to capitalize on these opportunities in in the first half as turnovers and missed shots kept the game close. In the second half, freshman Chloe Silance stepped up to dictate play on the offensive end and help lead the Bruins to a comfortable 17-9 win. Silance finished with 9 points on the day (5 G, 4 A), while freshman Kristin Alexander tacked on 6 points off 5 goals and 1 assist in addition to 8 draw controls. UCLA controlled the game from the start on Sunday against Arizona State. All players contributed to the team win, which saw the Bruins jump out to a 10-1 halftime lead and finish out the game 18-4. The Bruins displayed a balanced, dynamic attack with 13 of 18 goals coming off assists. Freshman Cambrey Knapp led the effort with 1 goal, 3 assists, 4 caused turnovers, and 5 draw controls. Senior goalkeeper Martine Ehrlich was solid in cage for the Bruins with 11 saves against only 4 goals. Fellow freshman Gretchen Kiep added 10 points over the weekend with 4 goals and 1 assist in each game. The wins bring UCLA’s record to 8-1 overall, and 5-1 in the WWLL. Up next for the Bruins is 11th ranked UC Santa Barbara next Saturday in Santa Barbara.
