Bruins Edge Davis in Season Opening Double HeaderFeb. 2, 2014 The Bruins opened the season with home games against UC Davis for both 'A' and 'B' teams. In the first game of the day, 'B' team jumped out to a 8-5 lead at halftime. The second half was filled with back and forth play, but the Bruins held on for a 15-12 win. With 20 freshmen on the roster, it was no surprise that they would provide an immediate impact. Freshman Aspen Bonini led the Bruins with 4 points (3G, 1A), while fellow freshman Lisa Lyon added 3 goals. The season opener for 'A' team followed shortly after, with no shortage of excitement and energy. UCLA dominated play throughout the first half, but poor shooting by the Bruins coupled with strong goaltending from the Aggies, resulted in a tight 3-2 lead at the half. The game continued to stay tight with the Bruins and Aggies trading goals back and forth. Regulation time ended in a 7-7 tie. In the first half of overtime, strong defensive play limited each team to one possession with no goals scored. In the second half of overtime, the Aggies came up with the draw, but the Bruins worked hard to get the ball back and struck quickly off a transition goal where freshmen Gretchen Kiep connected with Chloe Silance, who put the ball in the back of the net. UCLA held off any last chance effort by the Aggies to pull out the 8-7 win. Freshmen also made an instant impact for the 'A' team with midfielder Kristin Alexander netting 3 goals on the day and midfielder Gretchen Kiep tallying 3 assists. Sophomore midfielder Sam Fletcher was consistent in the midfield, coming up with 5 draw controls. Junior captain Molly Tracy anchored the defense with five caused turnovers and five groundballs. Both teams will prepare to travel to Cal Poly next weekend to continue WWLL play.
