Four-year starter, captain, and former assistant coach for Texas State, Kyle Saunders, enters his first season as Head Coach of the Bobcats in the fall of 2014. As Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Bobcats in 2010, Texas State won the Lone Star Alliance Championship and the program’s only birth to the MCLA National Tournament.

Saunders returns to Texas State after two years as an assistant coach in Austin’s Lake Travis High School Program. He takes over for Michael Brand, 2 time Lone Star Alliance Coach of the Year, who steps into a new role as Associate Head Coach with responsibility over the Bobcats’ defensive unit.

Brand commented on Saunders arrival saying, “Kyle was the man we targeted to take over the head coaching position from the moment I decided to take a lesser role. The stars aligned as he suited up proudly for the Bobcats, works with high school lacrosse players throughout the state and can focus on our offensive development, which is his specialty. I made sure to incorporate the student athletes in this decision because it is their team. Thankfully they unanimously agreed with me on who the right man was to take over the program. The future is bright in San Marcos.”

In his two years in Lake Travis Texas, Saunders also served as Youth Coaching Director for the Lake Travis Youth Lacrosse Association implementing development systems and strategy for their youth players and coaches in addition to coaching both the high school JV and Varsity teams in 2013 and 2014.

Before Lake Travis, Saunders worked tirelessly in Westlake Texas as a development coach for grades 5-8 providing individual instruction and team-based coaching. His team of sixth graders, now freshman, won the 2012 Cy-Fair Lacrosse classic and his 8th grade team ran the table and went undefeated en route to the 2012 CTYLA’s league Championship.

Prior to coaching youth lacrosse, Saunders started his coaching journey at Texas State in 2008. As an Offensive Coordinator under Head Coach Chris Park, the Bobcats made the Lone Star Alliance playoffs 2 consecutive seasons before winning the league’s championship in 2010.

While playing at Texas State, Saunders was a four-year starter and captain while playing both attack and midfield. In his final two seasons as a Bobcat, he played in all 26 games scoring 47 goals and tallying 31 assists.

As Head Assistant of Dallas Select and Texas United travel teams along with coaching various community teams he has consistently coached over a hundred games a year dating back to 2010. Having coached countless hours at the collegiate, high school, middle school, and elementary school levels he has helped hundreds of Texans develop their game through instruction, team practices, and camps.

Saunders brings extensive knowledge of the game and a great approach of personal development as a coach. He invests heavily in broadening his lacrosse horizons and learning from every coach, regardless of their sport, that he has a chance to interact with. His methodologies and systems are always evolving, as does his passion for teaching the game.
