2400 Miles Later, Tech Looks to Rebound at Home

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 7, 2009

For the Texas Tech Men’s Lacrosse team, life on the road is just another part of the game.

Since their season opener in Lubbock against Oklahoma State on January 17th , the Red Raiders have traveled across far and wide, amassing well over 2,400 miles of travel even before the season’s halfway-point. 2,400 miles – roughly the distance from Phoenix, AZ to Philadelphia, PA. However the folks from Raiderland haven’t been to the Valley of the Sun or Fish-town this season. In fact, the team has yet to travel outside of the State of Texas at this point in their 2009 campaign.

Life for a collegiate lacrosse team in West Texas is far from ordinary. In the land where cotton is king, where, between dust storms, oil rigs and wind-power generators can been seen sprinkled throughout the landscape of the red dirt of the South Plains, home games come few and far-between.

With a 2-4 overall record (1-1 LSA North), the Red Raiders eagerly look forward to a couple well-deserved games against divisional rivals Texas Christian and Oklahoma. While staying home for the weekend may seem a blessing for the road-toughened veterans of Texas Tech, this weekend will by no means be an easy one. The Red Raiders won hard-fought games against both teams in their 2008 season, edging Oklahoma in a 14-13 thriller in Norman, and escaping Ft. Worth with an 11-7 victory over the Horned Frogs.

Although the team has played extremely well despite the considerable wear of travel, Tech has been on the wrong side of several close games, including three losses averaging scoring deficits of just three goals each.

TTU Attackman B. Wolf Despite a 1-4 road record, Texas Tech Head Coach Andrew Widmer   is optimistic about the games to come, “The team traveled three weekends in a row with a record of 1-4 during that time period. The offense was able to score goals, the defense played very well, but the team was plagued with an inability to clear the ball,” explains Widmer.

Team Captain and Senior All-American attackman Bryce Wolf  adds, “We dropped a couple of close games, but we are looking to come back strong with two big wins this weekend. The past two weeks have been spent working out the kinks in the transition game and fine tuning the offense as well as defense.”

With two wins this weekend, the Red Raiders could move back into solid contention for the 2009 LSA playoffs.
