PLANO, TX - Following a great day of lacrosse at the annual Richardson Halloween Shootout, the Texas Tech Red Raiders took on the Oklahoma Sooners at the tournament‘s first collegiate showcase game. The game’s attendance saw near-record numbers, as the stands and surrounding areas in Plano’s Clark Central Field were limited to standing room only. The Red Raiders started slow, but rose to the occasion with a 3 goal and 6 assist production from Texas Tech’s All-American attackman Bryce Wolf . Complementing Wolf’s performance was a 4 goal effort from junior William Sterner , and 3 goal performance of junior Danny McNamara .

Oklahoma scored the first goal of the game, but Tech came right back with a goal after winning the ensuing faceoff. Matt Davis , junior midfielder from Plano, TX, carried the ball down the field after winning the faceoff, calling his own number on a fast-break drive to the cage, which tied the game at 1 goal for each team. After Davis’s breakaway goal, however, it looked to be a long night for the Red Raiders as Oklahoma followed by scoring 3 unanswered goals, ending the first quarter with the Sooners up 4-1.

Tech’s defense played a solid second quarter holding Oklahoma to only 2 goals. The Red Raiders lost midfielder Matt Davis  during the second quarter from an injury which the Texas Tech staff have released as being a fracture to the midfielder‘s collar bone. The Red Raiders have estimated that, as a result of the injury, Davis will be out for the remainder of the fall, but will be back ready to go for the upcoming spring season. The offense rallied around the loss of Davis, one of the team’s captains, and followed by posting 6 goals in the second quarter. Despite the loss of Davis, Tech managed to carry the momentum going into halftime with a 7-6 lead.

The Red Raiders began the second half just as they had ended the first, with the Red Raiders in control. Texas Tech managed to get their talented, yet young, squad valuable playing time in many of the players‘ first ever collegiate lacrosse game. After senior goalie Landon Ludlow  held the Sooners to 6 goals through 2 quarters of play, junior goalie Bart Jameson  stepped between the pipes for Tech and held the Sooners to only 2 goals in the 3rd quarter. The Red Raiders benefited from great defensive play in the 3rd quarter from rookie midfielder Ty Mackey  and sophomore defenseman Gavin Carr .

The 4th quarter started with the Red Raiders up 10-8. Rookie goalie Philip Hewett  saw his first action at the collegiate level tonight and played a great 4th quarter, holding Oklahoma to only 2 goals in his first playing experience for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders were able to add 4 of their own goals, bringing the final score to a margin of 14-10.

Texas Tech’s offense was aided by the 2 goals of All-American attackman Clayton Schneider  and a goal by freshman attackman Neil Gordon . LSM Justin Castle  had a great night as he took noteworthy control of the Red Raider’s transition game and defensive communication. Tech looks to build on this game when they travel to the Aggieland Fall Classic in two weeks and then into the spring when they open the season against Oklahoma State on January 17.

A special thanks to Mike Moran, Tom Fitzsimmons, the Plano Independent School District, and all of the lacrosse fans that came out to support the Red Raiders.
