Tough Times In Seattle

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 26, 2007

The Red Raiders concluded their Spring Break trip to Seattle, Washington with a dissappointing 1-2 turnout.

This being the Red Raiders first trip to the PNCLL, and to the Pacific NorthWest in general, hopes were high to return to the Lone Star State undefeated in out-of-conference play.

Versus Rhode Island, Tech played near-flawless lacrosse. A few unfortunate man-down situations yielded most of the goals for which Rhode Island scored, but the Red Raiders gave a solid defensive effort overall. Bart Jameson  played brilliantly in his first start in collegiate lacrosse.

During the two-day break between games, the team enjoyed the many sights and wonderful culture which Seattle had to offer. Unable to get an opportunity to practice, the team decided to enjoy the area a little and relax.

Friday told a different story for the team, however. Tech came out strong, taking a lead in the first quarter. The second qurater was mediocre for the Red Raiders, as they began to see their grip over the Huskies loosen significantly.

As the second half played out, the Red Raiders were unrelentingly called for penalty after penalty, a tally that reached over 15 minutes in penalties by the end of the game. The Huskies took good advantage over this opportunity, and despite the Red Raiders constant offensive pressure and scoring capability, they were unable to make up for the lost ground. Tech lost this thriller of a game 16-19.

Saturday concluded the action for the week. Tech went up against former national champion Simon Fraser University. As the Red Raiders took the field to combat their Canadian brethereign, the team couldn't help but still feel the bitter residue left over from the previous game. Determined to win, the Red Raiders took an early lead over the Clansmen, but quickly saw it fade as halftime approached.

With the game still well in grasp, the Raiders took the field in the second half with ferocity. Tech kept the game within two goals until about halfway through the third quarter. Suddenly, the effects of 3 hard-played game began to show, and the Red Raiders watched as Simon Fraser went on to score 12 unanswered goals in the second half.

Despite playing with tremendous heart and determination, Texas Tech dropped the match, 11-23, a score which is poorly indicative of the level of play and effort that was put into the game.

Tech will now prepare for back-to-back games against division rivals, Texas and Baylor.
