SOU Falls to SMCFeb. 12, 2012 SOU hosted Saint Mary's College on Sunday. SMC started their season with a preseason ranking of #20 in the nation. They went to Cal State Fullerton, 3 x defending SLC champion, to start the season and SMC came away w/ a 11-7 win. SOU knew they had a challenge on their hands. The first qt. saw a back and forth battle that ended in a 3-3 tie. SOU scored first with a goal from Sr Captain #3 Wyatt Knight on a nice feed from fellow Sr. Captain #11 Sean McQuown. SMC would answer quickly to tie the game at 1-1. SOU would score the next two goals both by Grad. student/ Captain #2 Pat Verdun. SMC answered once all even and then capitalized on an EMO opportunity to tie the game at 3-3. SMC gave SOU a great opp. in the 2nd qt. w/ a 2 min. non-releasable penalty. SOU took an ill-advised shot and SMC capitalized on an un-settled situation to take the lead 4-3. SMC followed up with another goal, and taking the momentum, to make the score 5-3. SOU would answer w/ another goal from #2 on a feed from #13 Tom Halley. The teams traded goals to end the half 6-5 in favor of SMC. The 3rd qt. belonged to SMC and proved to be the difference in the game. SMC was able to capitalize on many un-forced turnovers by SOU and SOU penalties. SMC led 12-7 going into the 4th. The 2012 SOU team showed the heart, hustle, and will to never quit in the 4th qt. SOU outscored SMC 5-3 in the 4th but the damage had been done. Final score 15-12 in favor of SMC. SOU has so much to build on from this game vs. a Nationally ranked opponent. SOU's Freshman Goalie Killian Spicer-Torreblanca stepped up big w/ 17 saves. All mistakes by SOU are correctable and this team has the potential to have a very solid season. Thanks to SMC for another great game. Next up for SOU is Humboldt St. on 2/17 at 3pm in Arcata, CA.
