Portland Snaps SOU's Win Streak at 4
The University of Portland Pilots defeated SOU 13-6 in Medford, OR on Saturday. From the opening whistle UP came to play and SOU was very flat. Portland led after the first period by the score of 4-1 due to out-working the Raiders and capitalizing on our defensive mistakes. UP's first goal came on a nice drive from X, we had our first slide ready but our 2nd slide was way too late and UP scored. UP's second goal came off another drive from behind the cage and this time our first slide wasn't ready so we gave up a goal on the doorstep. The game would continue this way w/ SOU making tons of defensive mistakes, not moving our feet, talking, and swinging at sticks when we slid. The 2nd was a little better for SOU as we were only outscored 4-3 making the count 8-4 at the half. The 3rd would see the scoring pace slow as both teams were able to put in 2 goals. UP's Freshman LSM wreaked havoc all game for the Pilots with many take-away checks. SOU would not score in the final period and the Pilots put 3 more goals in to win the game 13-6. Bright spots for SOU were Sophmore midfielder #4 Max Raynor scoring twice and winning 9 of 15 f/o's. Senior Goalie #7 Carter Boggess recorded 17 saves. Senior Defenseman #18 Jack Pfeiffer played the game while battling pneumonia and showed tremendous character. Hats off to the Pilots for coming to play. Congrats to first year Coach Mike Wilkerson leading the Pilots to their first ever win over SOU. The highlight of the day came after our game as the first ever high school lacrosse game played in Southern Oregon occurred as the Roseburg Indians played the Sisters Outlaws. The game was exciting w/ Roseburg winning 7-6. Thanks to both the teams and coaches for making this happen in an effort to help start youth lacrosse in the Rogue Valley.
