SOU Defeats PLU to Move to 1-1 on the SeasonFeb. 14, 2011 SOU and PLU battled for 60 minutes on Saturday in what was a very exciting game. SOU was able to come away with a hard fought victory by the score of 8-6. PLU scored the first goal of the game 3 minutes in as #11 for the Lutes dodged to the cage, avoided a slide and scored unassisted. SOU's defense tightened up and did not allow another goal in the quarter. SOU got on the scoreboard about half way through the qt. w/ a goal by Captain midfielder #11 Sean McQuown. SOU then closed the qt. w/ two goals in 8 seconds, the first was scored by Jr. Attack #42 Joey Moseanko assisted by Jr Attack #3 Wyatt Knight. #3 Knight then scored again w/ 3 seconds to go in the qt. to lead 3-1 after the first. SOU scored just 35 seconds into the 2nd qt. on another goal by #42 this time assisted by #2 Pat Verdun. After the 3 goals in just 46 seconds SOU had the momentum and looked as if we might be able to pull away. PLU wisely took a timeout and did a solid job regrouping, they did not allow a goal the rest of the qt. Their honorable mention All-America Goalie really stepped up in the 2nd making some quality saves. PLU #77 scored 6 minutes into the qt. to make the halftime score 4-2 in favor of the Raiders. The 2nd half highlighted the two best goalies in the League as SOU's #7 Carter Boggess and PLU's #3 Greg Fredlund continued to deny the shooters. Both goalies ended the game w/ 18 saves, none of which were too easy. PLU struck first in the 3rd 5 minutes in as #22 found an open #2 to make the score 4-3. SOU answered two minutes later as #3 Knight scored again to increase the lead back to 2 for SOU. #2 Verdun put another goal in w/ 4:21 to go in the qt to push the SOU lead to 6-3. PLU answered just 40 seconds later w/ a goal by #77. #2 Verdun found #11 McQuown for the Raiders w/ 2:23 to go to end the scoring with SOU leading 7-4 going into the final qt. PLU was able to score 5 minutes in to the qt w/ an unassisted goal by #5. PLU's defense really stepped up shuting down the Raider offense. SOU got a costly penalty w/ just 3 minutes to go in the game and PLU capitalized to pull them w/n one goal at 7-6. Controversy was to follow as SOU turned over the ball w/ 2 minutes to go. PLU had the ball inside of their offensive box and their coach called for a TO. However, at almost the same time his player shot the ball and #7 made the save for SOU. The refs deemed that PLU did not have possession when the TO was called so SOU retained the ball. SOU would put in the final goal w/ 35 seconds to go as #42 Moseanko evaded the PLU double team finding a wide open #2 Verdun who barried the empty-net goal. Both teams showed tremendous heart in this game and it was a pleasure to be a part of it. Thanks to PLU and hopefully we'll see you again this year.
