SOU Defeats Montana St. 7-6Mar. 6, 2010 SOU took on Montana St. for the first time in our history in Caldwell, ID on Saturday. Montana St. (RMLC-D2) jumped out to a quick lead during an unsettled situation in which #21 a d-pole got a gb, pushed it, and finished it. SOU would answer quickly as #2 Patrick Verdun pushed a fast break hitting a cutting #6 Bubba VanEgdom to tie the game at 1. SOU would take the lead as freshman middie #20 Tucker VanMatre pushed another fast break, this time hitting fellow freshman #22 Tom Halley to put SOU up 2-1. MT. St. would tie the game at 2 to end the first. SOU would get the lead back as Freshman #5 Erik Main found an open #6 Bubba on an EMO play to make the game 3-2. Bubba would score our 4th goal of the game on a solid feed by Sophmore #2 Verdun for his 2nd assist of the game on another fast break. MT.St. was held to just one goal in the 2nd to make the score 4-3 at the half. SOU showed great improvement on shot placement in this game putting all of our shots on cage in the 3rd. However, MT.St really controlled the ball well in the 3rd outshooting SOU 10 to 4. Jr. Goalie #7 Carter Boggess made 5 big saves in the 3rd while letting in 3 goals. SOU scored twice, once by #6 assisted by #1 Ty Baumann, and the other goal came on a well executed EMO play as #22 buried another one fed by #5. The game was tied going into the final qt. SOU's defense played extremely well throughout the game really pressuring the MT.St. offense. SOU's defense would not allow MT. St. to score in the final qt and Carter made 3 huge saves. #22 scored the game winner about half way through the qt. on an off-hip rip. SOU wishes MT. St. the best on their season. They were a very fun group to play and they have great sportsmanship.
